<p>It&rsquo;s back to Tryon for the twelfth leg of the US Equestrian Open of Eventing&mdash;and with just one event scheduled in May, this weekend will be one to watch. From leaderboard shakeups to breakout performances, there&rsquo;s plenty on the line at a venue known for delivering drama.</p>

<p class="" data-start="112" data-end="311"><strong>Boyd Martin</strong> heads to Tryon as the new <strong>FEI World Number One</strong> &mdash; and with <strong>135 points</strong> on the US Open leaderboard, he&rsquo;s within striking distance of the top three. A win here could shake things up while also securing his position in the FEI rankings.</p>
<p class="" data-start="313" data-end="564">He brings forward <strong>Tsetserleg TSF</strong>, or &lsquo;Thomas&rsquo; &mdash; the most experienced horse in the field. With an Olympic appearance to many 5* completions including a podium in 2019, Thomas has a huge fan following. It&rsquo;s no surprise they top the Prediction Centre this weekend with a <strong>27% win chance</strong>.</p>
<h3 data-start="940" data-end="1184">Sara Kozumplik - Rock Phantom</h3>
<p>One of the early stars of the US Open Series, <strong data-start="168" data-end="184">Rock Phantom</strong> and <strong data-start="189" data-end="207">Sara Kozumplik</strong> took the win at Bouckaert in 2024 &mdash; and now they&rsquo;re back and heading to Tryon. This marks their&nbsp;first 4 star of the season, with Sara returning to the saddle after a minor injury kept her out of Kentucky. The numbers speak for themselves as they sit second on the Prediction Centre with a <strong data-start="527" data-end="545">16% win chance.</strong></p>
<h3>Caroline Pamucku - Redfield Dexter and HSH Tolan King</h3>
<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">It&rsquo;s a two-horse attack from <strong>Caroline Pamukcu</strong> this weekend &mdash; and together, her chances are looking strong.&nbsp;<strong>Redfield Dexter</strong> comes in with a <strong>13% win chance</strong> after a standout performance at Ocala, where he completed his first CCI4*-S and finished fifth. With that milestone behind them, we expect they may take the handbrake off cross-country and have a serious shot at the podium.</p>
<p><strong>HSH Tolan King</strong>, the more seasoned of the two, edged his stablemate for fourth at Ocala and carries a <strong>12% win chance</strong> into Tryon. Together, Caroline&rsquo;s duo gives her<strong> a combined 25% shot at the win</strong> &mdash; not a bad hand to be playing.</p>

<li data-start="1653" data-end="1771"><strong data-start="1901" data-end="1917">Laine Ashker</strong> &amp; <strong data-start="1931" data-end="1945">Lovedance:</strong> While it's a 4* debut for the horse, this pair looks to put on an impressive performance.</li>

New Podcast: The Tryon Preview Show

<p class="" data-start="120" data-end="499">From new personal bests to leaderboard shakeups, the<strong> Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S</strong> delivered a weekend packed with momentum shifts and standout moments. <strong>Will Coleman</strong> and <strong>Off the Record</strong> led from the very first phase, but there were big moves happening just behind them as<strong> Phillip Dutton, Jessica Phoenix,</strong> and <strong>Allison Springer</strong> made major statements in the US Equestrian Open Series.</p>

<p class="" data-start="686" data-end="1136"><strong>Will Coleman </strong>and&nbsp;<strong>Off the Record</strong> were the stars of the show. They came out swinging with a 21.8 in the first phase&mdash;Timmy&rsquo;s best ever score at any level&mdash;and never gave up the lead. They added only 7.2 time penalties on cross-country (the fastest of the day) and just added four faults on Sunday in the showjumping, to defend Will's title at the Kentucky 4*-S. From start to finish, it was smooth, stylish, and a perfect example of what this partnership can do when they&rsquo;re on song.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1138" data-end="1217">This win wasn&rsquo;t just another notch on the belt&mdash;it was a record-defining moment:</p>
<p class="" data-start="1138" data-end="1217">🏆 Will's 16th career CCI4*-S win (15 of them on U.S. soil, plus CHIO Aachen)</p>

<p class="" data-start="1340" data-end="1398">🏆 Will&rsquo;s second win in five runnings of the Kentucky 4*-S</p>

<h3 data-start="1476" data-end="1937">Dutton and Phoenix Secure Key Podium Finishes</h3>
<p class="" data-start="1476" data-end="1937">And while Coleman took the win,<strong> Phillip Dutton</strong> stole the spotlight when it came to the series storyline. He came into Kentucky on top of the US Equestrian Open standings with 175 points&mdash;and both of his rides delivered.&nbsp;<strong>Possante</strong> finished second,<em> </em><strong>Denim </strong>took fourth, and together they helped push his season total to 215 points. That makes Dutton the first rider this year to break the 200-point barrier, and he now sits 30 points clear at the top of the table.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1939" data-end="2306">There was some speculation about whether Phillip&rsquo;s horses had the speed to challenge this field&mdash;and while both picked up time penalties, context matters. <strong>Off the Record</strong> was the fastest with 7.2; Phillip&rsquo;s horses weren&rsquo;t far behind.<strong> Possante </strong>and <strong>Denim</strong> both posted top-six cross-country times, proving that when it counts, they can absolutely turn up the heat.</p>
<p class="" data-start="2308" data-end="2707">Just behind them, <strong>Jessica Phoenix</strong> quietly climbed the podium into third place with<em> </em><strong>Freedom GS,</strong> adding 40 points and bumping her series total to 185. That makes her the closest challenger to Dutton&rsquo;s lead, and with a few more key results, she&rsquo;s well within striking distance. Her Ocala performance, her podium here&mdash;Jess is on a tear this season and proving she&rsquo;s got the firepower for a serious series run.</p>

Allison Springer</strong> and her crowd-favorite mare delivered one of the standout performances of the competition. They started in 25th after dressage, then rocketed up to finish fifth. It was one of the fastest cross-country rounds on the day, followed by a clear jumping round. This wasn&rsquo;t a fluke&mdash;this was a star stepping fully into the spotlight. With a string of strong recent performances,<strong> No May Moon</strong> could be the sleeper pick for the finale.</p>

Riders like C<strong>aroline Pamukcu, Ema Klugman</strong>, and <strong>Allison Springer </strong>are still in the hunt, especially as we head into the second half of the series. His father, Michael Matz, is a three-time Olympian, World Championship medalist, and Kentucky Derby-winning trainer. His mother, D.D. Matz, is also a Pan American Games medalist with an exceptional eye for talent.</span></p>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">Despite this pedigree, there was no pressure to ride. &ldquo;They never forced me to do it,&rdquo; Alex says. &ldquo;I think the pressure I feel is the pressure I put on myself.&rdquo;</span></p>
<h3 class="sh-color-black sh-color"><strong class="sh-color-black sh-color">Finding His Own Path in Show Jumping</strong></h3>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">Unlike many top juniors who compete intensively from a young age, Alex didn&rsquo;t take the sport seriously until after college. While studying, he watched his friends pursue finance careers in New York City, but the corporate world didn&rsquo;t have the same appeal.</span></p>

<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">&ldquo;That week was fantastic,&rdquo; he recalls. &ldquo;The crowds are huge, and I don&rsquo;t think I&rsquo;ve ever won three FEI classes at one show before.&rdquo;</span></p>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">One of the horses that took him to victory was Ikigai, a talented gelding owned by the McNeil family, who have been instrumental supporters of Alex&rsquo;s career.</span></p>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">&ldquo;Ikigai had an injury where he was out for close to a year, and they really stayed patient,&rdquo; Alex explains. &ldquo;We had always believed he would win a five-star Grand Prix, and when he did, it was amazing.&rdquo;</span></p>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">With the US Equestrian Open on the horizon, Ikigai is Alex&rsquo;s top contender. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s the most talented horse I&rsquo;ve ever ridden,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;If I do things right, he&rsquo;ll jump clear.&rdquo;</span></p>
<h3 class="sh-color-black sh-color"><strong class="sh-color-black sh-color">The Hard Work Behind the Success</strong></h3>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">A key part of Alex&rsquo;s development has been the daily commitment from his father. Even with a full racing stable to manage, Michael Matz still makes time to train with Alex every day.<br></span></p>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">&ldquo;My dad is up at 4:30 AM to go to the racetrack, then comes here, and we have a flat lesson every day,&rdquo; Alex says. &ldquo;Having him and my mom&rsquo;s guidance is the best strategy for me.&rdquo;<br></span></p>
<p class="sh-color-black sh-color"><span class="sh-color-black sh-color">His mother, known for her sharp eye in selecting talent, balances out his father&rsquo;s optimism. &ldquo;My dad thinks every horse can go to the Olympics,&rdquo; Alex laughs. &ldquo;And I like every horse too! But my mom is much more selective.&rdquo;</span></p>

<h3>How it began</h3>

<p><em>&ldquo;We started this conversation two and a half years ago, Bill Moroney and Tom [O'Mara] basically put a little bit of a mission in here and said, we need to have this thing called a BIG initiative&mdash;about creating something that would be beneficial to the sports.&rdquo;</em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>The board took inspiration from, amongst things, the FedEx Cup in golf. The goal was to create a structured competition that fans could follow throughout the year, leading to a major final. <em>&ldquo;We could see that in tennis or you could see that in golf or you see that in racing, you know, in Formula One. How do you follow somebody and become a fan?&rdquo;</em> he asked. <em>&ldquo;That was the basis of the thought process&mdash;creating a series that somebody could follow over time that would lead to a final, that would lead to something.&rdquo;</em></p>

<h3>Is there an event you <em>have</em> to win?</h3>
<p>Unlike one-off competitions like Badminton, Burghley, or Aachen, the Open aims to bring continuity to the sport. <em>&ldquo;Jumping ended up being a little bit different because there are so many other series. The question that I got asked that I asked was, is there an event in the United States that you have to win and you have to have it on your resume if you want to feel like you are one of those players?</em>&rdquo; O&rsquo;Connor explained.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Historically, major show jumping events in the U.S. revolved around Madison Square Garden, Toronto, and Washington. With the Open, the focus has shifted to Week 12 in Wellington. <em>&ldquo;We decided to really try to invest in that week and make that really the one</em>,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p>For eventing, Morven Park was chosen as the final venue because of its rich history and accessibility. <em>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s gorgeous,&rdquo; </em>O&rsquo;Connor noted.<em> &ldquo;But also, it&rsquo;s got history in the sport of eventing.&rdquo;</em></p>

<h3>The Power of Storytelling</h3>
<p>Looking back on his career, he noted that what stays with athletes the most are not just the victories, but the stories of struggle and success. <em>&ldquo;The stories actually become the powerful thing that you become part of your life and that you end up trying to express.&rdquo;</em></p>
<p>By structuring the competition as a series, the Open allows for narratives to unfold over time, rather than being confined to a single weekend. <em>&ldquo;We should talk about it just like other sports do,&rdquo;</em> O&rsquo;Connor said. <em>&ldquo;That type of drive and thought process and competitive intelligence is a big part of being able to win something that is going to be as prestigious as what the Open is going to be.&rdquo;</em></p>
<h3>Bringing More Fans Into the Sport</h3>
<p>One of the Open&rsquo;s long-term objectives is to engage a broader audience. O&rsquo;Connor believes this starts with creating an emotional connection between fans and the sport. &ldquo;In the end, the unusual thing about this is that there are two stories and, always those two stories in the relationship are happening at the same time.&rdquo; he explained. <em>&ldquo;You have the person's technical ambition, and then you have this horse story, and then you have this relationship story between them.</em>&rdquo;</p>
<p>That human-horse relationship, he argues, is key to capturing interest. <em>&ldquo;If we can open that door and crack that door open, people will understand it. <p>Beyond competition, O&rsquo;Connor believes equestrian sport is fundamentally about communication. <br><br>&ldquo;<em>When you get down to it, I believe, when you talk about horse-human relationships, it's a story and it's a study of communication. Right? So how do we communicate? And how do we communicate with not just amongst each other, you know, even situations like this, how do we communicate with human to human? And how do we communicate with something that doesn't speak human?&rdquo;</em></p>

<p>As the Open continues to develop, O&rsquo;Connor sees its influence growing. <br><br><em>&ldquo;It is becoming already, I would say, a catchphrase, right? People are talking about the Open and the other sports are talking about, 'Okay, I'm going to prepare for the Open. I'm going to get ready for the Open. I'm going to, that's going to be my target for the year.&rdquo;</em></p>
<p>Ultimately, O&rsquo;Connor hopes the Open will establish itself as the pinnacle of U.S. equestrian sport. <br><br><em>&ldquo;When whoever wins that knows that they've won something, right? Not just competed on the weekend, but they know they have won something, which is very important because it makes it more important to the athlete.&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Where the athletes know they had to play the game at the top level in order to be successful.&rdquo;</em></p>

<p>&ldquo;He has taught me more than any other horse about patience and when to slow down,&rdquo; she says. Her strategy involved treating him as though he was learning from scratch, allowing him to rebuild his confidence. That methodical patience paid off, as Firefly has since delivered some of the <strong>highest scores in the US Equestrian Open</strong>, earning over 80% from one of the judges this year.</p>
<h3><strong>Fayvel: A Rising Star</strong></h3>
<p>If Firefly represents a lesson in patience, then <strong>Fayvel</strong> is Anna&rsquo;s chance to be bold. Originally owned and competed by<strong>&nbsp;Cynthia Davila</strong>, Fayvel transitioned into Anna&rsquo;s competitive string when Cynthia&rsquo;s injury took her out of the saddle. Despite coming onto the international stage slightly later than intended, Fayvel is proving to be a powerhouse, taking Anna to the the World Cup&trade; Final in Riyadh in April 2024. His rideability allows Anna to take more risks, particularly in the freestyle where she can <strong>push for every point.</strong></p>
