<p data-start="365" data-end="687">The US Equestrian Open of Eventing heads to <strong data-start="411" data-end="452">Aspen Farms this weekend</strong> for the thirteenth CCI4*-S qualifier before the $200K Final in October. Here&rsquo;s what to watch for across all three phases and which combinations have the numbers (and the speed) to contend.</p>

<h3>The Start List<br><br></h3>
<p>A small field, doesn't mean it won't be competitive...</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Karen O&rsquo;Neal &amp; Clooney 14 (USA) - </strong>Karen arrives at Aspen with the 11-year-old Clooney 14, fresh off a fourth-place finish at the CCI4*-S at Twin Rivers. After narrowly missing the podium there, she&rsquo;ll be determined to move up a place (or two) this weekend.</li>
<li><strong>Tommy Greengard &amp; Joshuay MBF (USA) -</strong> This is Tommy&rsquo;s first four-star run with Joshuay MBF since 2023. They missed the 2024 season but returned strong at the CCI3* level earlier this year. With two 4*-S starts under his belt this season on <strong data-start="580" data-end="595">That&rsquo;s Me Z</strong>, Tommy comes in sharp and competition-ready.</li>
<li><strong>Cristina Rennie &amp; Flight Of The Arabesque (CAN) - </strong>This will only be the second CCI4* for both horse and rider but their debut last year couldn&rsquo;t have gone better: a double clear and a second-place finish. Cristina started strong and will be aiming high again at Aspen.</li>
<li><strong>Renee Kalkman &amp; Flame Eternal </strong><span style="font-weight: 500;"><strong>(CAN) -</strong> Coming off a podium finish at the CCI3*-L&nbsp;at Twin Rivers, this experienced pair arrives with momentum. The 14-year-old proved his pace with no time penalties there and on Aspen's cross country course, that could be the edge they need.</span></li>

<p data-start="1378" data-end="1624">Only&nbsp;<span data-start="1633" data-end="1670">2 of the last 10 dressage leaders</span> at US CCI4*-S events have gone on to win. But don&rsquo;t count out&nbsp;<strong data-start="1524" data-end="1538">Clooney 14</strong> or <strong data-start="1542" data-end="1569">Flight of the Arabesque</strong>, who both sit comfortably in the low-to-mid 30s range.</p>

<p data-start="1864" data-end="2017">With <strong data-start="1869" data-end="1897">only 30% of rounds clear</strong> at U.S. CCI4*-S events, this is where many dreams unravel. <p data-start="2019" data-end="2035">Who jumps clean? <strong data-start="2038" data-end="2052">Clooney 14</strong> and <strong data-start="2057" data-end="2071">Joshua MBF</strong> are the most reliable jumpers on paper, both averaging just <strong data-start="2132" data-end="2149">1.3 penalties</strong> across their last 6 FEI runs.</p>

<p data-start="2507" data-end="2666"><strong data-start="2507" data-end="2525">Clear and fast</strong> is rare at this level in Aspen.<strong> Jonathan Elliot </strong>described the course on this week&rsquo;s US Equestrian Open Podcast as <strong data-start="83" data-end="121">educational, but still a challenge</strong>.</p>

<p data-start="126" data-end="380" data-is-last-node=""><em data-start="126" data-end="380" data-is-last-node="">"It's there to prep them and get them ready for something else, but it's no cream puff either. That's kind of always been our philosophy across the levels. It's important for people to see a standard and get that sense of accomplishment from doing it."<br></em></p>

<p>Across the last 10 CCI4*-S competitions on US soil,&nbsp;only 2% of cross-country rounds finished clear and inside the time. In 2024, no one made the time at Aspen. Can anyone do it in 2025?</p>
<p data-start="2834" data-end="2965">Although<strong data-start="2834" data-end="2851"> Flame Eternal</strong> and <strong data-start="2856" data-end="2883">Flight of the Arabesque</strong> are the fastest in the field by Top Speed Percentage (79% and 77%, respectively). <strong data-start="2968" data-end="2982">Clooney 14</strong> could be one to watch - in this class last year, she posted the fastest round of the day, only adding 1.2 time penalties.</p>

<h3>So who wins?</h3>
<p>The&nbsp;<a href="https://prediction-centre.equiratings.com/competitions/aspen_4s_2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EquiRatings Prediction Centre</a> gives <strong>Karen O&rsquo;Neal</strong> and<strong> Clooney 14</strong> the edge with a <strong>57% win chance,</strong> but in a field this small, it&rsquo;s still anyone&rsquo;s game. A small mistake in any discipline is all it takes to turn the leaderboard upside down.</p>

Aspen Farms Preview: Big Moves in a Small Field

<p>We&rsquo;re over halfway through the first ever US Equestrian Open of Eventing - 12 Qualifiers done, eight to go. That&rsquo;s <strong>eight more chances to take the Series lead</strong>, or at least finish in the money (i.e. the top three).<br><br></p>
<ol>
<li>June 12th:<em> </em>Aspen Farms</li>
<li>June 27th: Maryland International</li>
<li>July 16th: The Event at Rebecca Farm</li>
<li>Sep 11th: The Fork at Tryon</li>
<li>Sep 18th: Plantation Field International</li>
<li>Sep 19th: Twin Rivers Fall International</li>
<li>Sep 25th: Stable View Oktoberfest</li>
<li>Oct 3rd: Woodside Fall International</li>
</ol>
<p>Right now,&nbsp;<strong>Phillip Dutton</strong> is at the top of the table (215 points) but his closest threat, <strong>Jessica Phoenix</strong>, is just 30 points behind him (185). Is that gap surmountable? <em>Absolutely</em>. Here are two main reasons why:</p>
<p>1.<strong> You don&rsquo;t need a string of top placings to haul in 30 points</strong>. You just need to finish anywhere from 3rd to 5th place at any one Qualifier.</p>
<p>2.<strong> Gains of up to 130 points at a single event have been recorded&nbsp;</strong>so far in the Series. Jess herself earned 75 points at TerraNova earlier this year by placing first &amp; second at that event.</p>
<h3><strong>Current Series Leaders (After Qualifier 12 of 20):</strong></h3>

<h2><strong>Don't Count Your Chickens, Phillip</strong></h2>
<p>Not only is it possible for Jess to overtake Phillip, it&rsquo;s reasonably within reach for several of our Series leaders.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Last year, <strong>Jess </strong>took two horses to Maryland International and four to Plantation Field - both among our remaining eight Qualifiers this season. If she can repeat her third place Maryland result from last July (Aeronautics), she'll gain 30 points right there. Boom. Enough to equal Phillip. From there, she'll just need a 10th place finish (or higher) at Plantation to secure the solo lead. Of course if she goes to Maryland and places first or second, that single result will put her in front.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>West-Coaster&nbsp;<strong>James Alliston</strong> (3rd on the leaderboard) earned 125 of his Series points by taking full advantage of California's Twin Rivers Qualifier in April. With the Twin Rivers Fall International among our last eight events, will he make a bid for more points? James did compete in the 2021, 2023&nbsp;<em>and </em>2024 Twin Rivers Fall CCI4*-S so its seems to be a well-liked stomping ground for him.</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Last year, <strong>Boyd Martin</strong> (4th on the leaderboard) brought two horses to the fall running of The Fork CCI4*-S and three entries to Plantation Field CCI4*-S, two events in this year's autumn Qualifiers. If those two 2024 results were part of this year's Open, Boyd would have earned 25 more points. A repeat effort this year wouldn't earn him the lead but it would put him in the top three as it stands (<a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/eventing-us-equestrian-open-quick-guide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a spot that earns $10,000 come season-end</a>).</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Likewise, <strong>Caroline Pamukcu</strong> (5th on the leaderboard) contested The Fork CCI4*-S and Plantation Field CCI4*-S last fall, with Plantation Field in particular being a frequent stop for her over the years.&nbsp; This year alone, Caroline has competed six different horses at the CCI4*-S level, giving her options for racking up points over a selection of our remaining eight Qualifiers.</li>
</ul>
<h2><strong>Let&rsquo;s Break it Down</strong></h2>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>1. What points are up for grabs</strong> in the remaining Qualifiers? Here&rsquo;s what can be banked depending on field size:&nbsp;<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;"></span></p>

<p><strong>2. What&rsquo;s possible?</strong> Here is how each of our current leaders reached their points tally. Between just the five of them, you&rsquo;ll notice six different instances of a rider earning 70+ points at a single event, not to mention&nbsp;<strong>James Alliston&rsquo;s</strong> 125-point haul at Twin Rivers and <strong>Boyd Martin</strong> grabbing 130 points at Stable View.</p>

<h2><strong>What's&nbsp;on the line?</strong></h2>
<p>Prize money. And in a sport where the vast majority of pros lead...let's say...less-than-opulent lifestyles, substantial winnings are particularly appreciated. After all the Qualifiers are a wrap, this is how the prize money is divvied:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Series winner: $25,000</li>
<li>2nd place: $15,000</li>
<li>3rd place: $10,000</li>
</ul>
<h2><strong>The Big Finale</strong></h2>
<p>And then there's the<strong> CCI4*-L Final at Morven Park in October</strong>. Series standings do <em>not </em>determine Final qualification. Instead, riders just need to complete any one of the Qualifiers with an MER, or a rider can even buy into the Final for $5,000 (provided they meet CCI4*-L pre-requisites). Any $5K buy-ins will be added to the Final's $200,000 prize-pot.</p>
<p>Now&nbsp;<em>that's </em>prize money. We can expect to see a strong field in the Series finale.</p>

Why Phillip Can't Count His Chickens

<p><span lang="EN-US">Jess talks to us this week on the US Equestrian Open Podcast</span> reflecting on one of her best seasons to date. She currently sits second in the series, 30 points behind the leader Phillip Dutton but crucially, with one less counting result. By the time she has that final counting result in place, she may well be leading the Open.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 322.2pt;">Earlier this spring, Jess delivered a performance for the ages at <strong>The Event at TerraNova</strong>, taking <strong>1st and 2nd</strong> in the CCI4*-S. Her top mare, <strong>Freedom GS</strong>, won on 39.1&mdash;while <strong>Fluorescent Adolescent</strong> placed second on 40.4.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="tab-stops: 322.2pt;">That 1&ndash;2 finish is as rare as it gets:</p>

<p>The young mare <strong>Jaguars Duende </strong>continued her upward trajectory at the <strong>Tryon</strong> leg of the <strong>US Equestrian Open of Eventing</strong> taking the win in the CCI4*-S class. It marked back-to-back CCI4*-S podium finishes for this pair, following a second place on debut at the level.</p>
<p>It was their speed cross country that set her ahead of the field that included established names like <strong>Tsetserleg</strong> and<strong> Direct Advance.</strong> <strong>Sharon White</strong> and <strong>Jags</strong>&nbsp;picked up 4.4 time faults, the fastest in the field, while the average for the class was 16 penalties.<br><br><strong>Kim Severson</strong> and <strong>Cooley Corraghy Diamond </strong>delivered a strong performance to secure second place, while rising stars <strong>Cole Horn</strong> and<strong> MBF Cooley Permission To Land</strong> rounded out the podium in third. Remarkably, it was only the pair&rsquo;s second CCI4*-S start together - and their first completion at the level - making the result a major milestone in their young partnership.</p>

A win here could shake things up while also securing his position in the FEI rankings.</p>
<p class="" data-start="313" data-end="564">He brings forward <strong>Tsetserleg TSF</strong>, or &lsquo;Thomas&rsquo; &mdash; the most experienced horse in the field. With an Olympic appearance to many 5* completions including a podium in 2019, Thomas has a huge fan following. It&rsquo;s no surprise they top the Prediction Centre this weekend with a <strong>27% win chance</strong>.</p>
<h3 data-start="940" data-end="1184">Sara Kozumplik - Rock Phantom</h3>
<p>One of the early stars of the US Open Series, <strong data-start="168" data-end="184">Rock Phantom</strong> and <strong data-start="189" data-end="207">Sara Kozumplik</strong> took the win at Bouckaert in 2024 &mdash; and now they&rsquo;re back and heading to Tryon. This marks their&nbsp;first 4 star of the season, with Sara returning to the saddle after a minor injury kept her out of Kentucky. The numbers speak for themselves as they sit second on the Prediction Centre with a <strong data-start="527" data-end="545">16% win chance.</strong></p>
<h3>Caroline Pamucku - Redfield Dexter and HSH Tolan King</h3>
<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">It&rsquo;s a two-horse attack from <strong>Caroline Pamukcu</strong> this weekend &mdash; and together, her chances are looking strong.&nbsp;<strong>Redfield Dexter</strong> comes in with a <strong>13% win chance</strong> after a standout performance at Ocala, where he completed his first CCI4*-S and finished fifth. With that milestone behind them, we expect they may take the handbrake off cross-country and have a serious shot at the podium.</p>
<p><strong>HSH Tolan King</strong>, the more seasoned of the two, edged his stablemate for fourth at Ocala and carries a <strong>12% win chance</strong> into Tryon. Together, Caroline&rsquo;s duo gives her<strong> a combined 25% shot at the win</strong> &mdash; not a bad hand to be playing.</p>

<p class="" data-start="120" data-end="499">From new personal bests to leaderboard shakeups, the<strong> Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S</strong> delivered a weekend packed with momentum shifts and standout moments. <strong>Will Coleman</strong> and <strong>Off the Record</strong> led from the very first phase, but there were big moves happening just behind them as<strong> Phillip Dutton, Jessica Phoenix,</strong> and <strong>Allison Springer</strong> made major statements in the US Equestrian Open Series.</p>

They came out swinging with a 21.8 in the first phase&mdash;Timmy&rsquo;s best ever score at any level&mdash;and never gave up the lead. They added only 7.2 time penalties on cross-country (the fastest of the day) and just added four faults on Sunday in the showjumping, to defend Will's title at the Kentucky 4*-S. From start to finish, it was smooth, stylish, and a perfect example of what this partnership can do when they&rsquo;re on song.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1138" data-end="1217">This win wasn&rsquo;t just another notch on the belt&mdash;it was a record-defining moment:</p>

<p class="" data-start="1476" data-end="1937">And while Coleman took the win,<strong> Phillip Dutton</strong> stole the spotlight when it came to the series storyline. He came into Kentucky on top of the US Equestrian Open standings with 175 points&mdash;and both of his rides delivered.&nbsp;<strong>Possante</strong> finished second,<em> </em><strong>Denim </strong>took fourth, and together they helped push his season total to 215 points. That makes Dutton the first rider this year to break the 200-point barrier, and he now sits 30 points clear at the top of the table.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1939" data-end="2306">There was some speculation about whether Phillip&rsquo;s horses had the speed to challenge this field&mdash;and while both picked up time penalties, context matters. <strong>Off the Record</strong> was the fastest with 7.2; Phillip&rsquo;s horses weren&rsquo;t far behind.<strong> Possante </strong>and <strong>Denim</strong> both posted top-six cross-country times, proving that when it counts, they can absolutely turn up the heat.</p>
<p class="" data-start="2308" data-end="2707">Just behind them, <strong>Jessica Phoenix</strong> quietly climbed the podium into third place with<em> </em><strong>Freedom GS,</strong> adding 40 points and bumping her series total to 185. That makes her the closest challenger to Dutton&rsquo;s lead, and with a few more key results, she&rsquo;s well within striking distance. Her Ocala performance, her podium here&mdash;Jess is on a tear this season and proving she&rsquo;s got the firepower for a serious series run.</p>

It was one of the fastest cross-country rounds on the day, followed by a clear jumping round. This wasn&rsquo;t a fluke&mdash;this was a star stepping fully into the spotlight. With a string of strong recent performances,<strong> No May Moon</strong> could be the sleeper pick for the finale.</p>

<p class="" data-start="810" data-end="1183">We&rsquo;ve seen dominance, but not like this. James Alliston not only showed up at Twin Rivers &mdash; he swept the podium and then some. His four-horse haul (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th) is the kind of stat you rarely see, even at the international level. As Diarm notes, it&rsquo;s the first time in nearly a decade that one rider has had four horses in the top five at this level.</p>

<h3 class="" data-start="1282" data-end="1315">🔄 Caroline Reloads for Ocala</h3>
<p class="" data-start="1317" data-end="1598">Caroline Pamukcu has two big bullets to fire this weekend: <strong data-start="1376" data-end="1395">Redfield Dexter</strong> and <strong>HSH</strong> <strong data-start="1400" data-end="1416">Tolland King</strong>. Sitting in eighth place with 60 points, a strong result at Ocala could launch her right into title contention &mdash; especially with HSH Blake poised to strike at Kentucky next week.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1600" data-end="1823">Prediction Center odds are stacked in her favor (this week and next) with Caroline holding both the first and second highest win chances. She&rsquo;s been here before &mdash; and after a few setbacks at TerraNova, you get the sense she&rsquo;s coming in sharp.</p>

<p class="" data-start="1855" data-end="2090">Let&rsquo;s just say it: Jaguar&rsquo;s Duende <em data-start="1890" data-end="1897">feels</em> like <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/jaguars-duende-sharon-white-on-her-rising-star-of-us-eventing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the breakout moment we&rsquo;ve all been waiting for</a>. Sharon White&rsquo;s carefully-managed star mare makes her 4* debut at Ocala, and it&rsquo;s one of the most buzzed-about entries of the entire series.</p>
<p class="" data-start="2092" data-end="2417">Will she run fast? Will she challenge for a podium? Maybe. But as Annie reminds us (and Diarm tries to internalize), this is a long game &mdash; and Sharon&rsquo;s approach has always been horse-first. That said, this mare hasn&rsquo;t missed a podium yet at the lower levels, so don&rsquo;t be surprised if she forces her way into the conversation.</p>

Phillip Dutton&rsquo;s early-season lead is suddenly under pressure. Boyd Martin, James Alliston, and possibly Caroline could be right there by the time Kentucky rolls around.</p>

Riding HSH Tolan King and Redfield Dexter, she has a 67% chance of winning and subsequently, shaking up the US Equestrian Open Leaderboard.</strong></em></div>

<h2>Double Podium = Double Points</h2>
<p><strong>Here&rsquo;s the kicker: points in the US Open are awarded per horse</strong>. So if Pamucku wins with one and finishes second or third with the other? She&rsquo;s not just taking home 40 points &mdash; she&rsquo;s banking up to 75.</p>
<p>Currently 8th on the leaderboard with 60 points, Pamukcu has a real chance to launch into the top 3 while closing in fast on <strong>Boyd Martin </strong>(135 points) and <strong>Phillip Dutton</strong> (175 points).</p>
<p>A double-pointed weekend at Ocala would also set Caroline up perfectly for the next event in the Series &mdash; the Kentucky CCI4*-S, where she&rsquo;s expected to line up with&nbsp;<strong>HSH Blake</strong>, a top contender and fan favourite. When we look back at the overall league standings before we head to the final at Morven, there is a good chance Ocala will be seen as a turning point for Caroline's challenge.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Other Movers to Watch</h2>
<p class="" data-start="2867" data-end="3097"><strong data-start="2867" data-end="2886">Jessica Phoenix</strong>, sitting 5th in the current standings with 75 points, is back with two rides. Her predicted win chances are lower (3% and 1%), but her consistent top finishes could still see her lock in key leaderboard points. Jess delivered a rare 1,2 in TerraNova in the last few weeks and another big finish here on one or both will see her pass the 100-point barrier.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p class="" data-start="3099" data-end="3268">And don&rsquo;t count out <strong data-start="3119" data-end="3137">Zachary Brandt</strong>, either. With a 6% win chance and a 36% podium probability aboard <strong>Direct Advance</strong>, he&rsquo;s right on the edge of this.</p>
<p>We&rsquo;re excited to see how it all unfolds &mdash; from Caroline&rsquo;s double threat to Duende&rsquo;s big debut.<br data-start="173" data-end="176">Ocala is ready to deliver drama, and the leaderboard is ready to move.</p>
