Back and Winning: Three Qualifier Victories Built on a Comeback
Julie Wolfert and SSH Playboy won at Rebecca Farm on their first run in 15 months. They are the third combination this Series to return from a long layoff and win first time back. Let's take a look at the story behind the wins.
Winning first time back is rare. A horse coming off a long break has not jumped a full cross-country track in months, has not been in a competition environment, and is often short of full fitness. Everything points against a result.
Despite this, three combinations have done it across the 2026 US Equestrian Open of Eventing. William Coleman & Diabolo, Colleen Loach & FE Golden Eye, and now Julie Wolfert & SSH Playboy all returned from months on the sidelines and won on the very first outing.
The through line is the horses. To win off a break, rusty and short of a run, a horse has to be very good. Class holds when fitness and sharpness do not. Here is how each of them came back.
William Coleman & Diabolo won the CCI4*-S at The Event at TerraNova on 14 November 2025, the second Qualifier of the Series. The 26.1 dressage led the field and the pair never gave the lead up. It was Diabolo's first four-star since Coatesville in September 2024 as an injury that autumn kept him out for most of 2025.
Coleman eased him back in October 2025 with a CCI2*-S run at Morven Park, a level below, before the TerraNova return a month later. The plan was Kentucky, and the plan worked. Diabolo won the Defender Kentucky CCI5*-L on his five-star debut in April 2026, finishing on 28.1. He is now bound for the World Championships at Aachen in August. From a lost season to a five-star title in six months.
Canada's Colleen Loach & FE Golden Eye came back from the longest gap of the three. The gelding's last international run was in October 2024. He returned 17 months later and won the CCI3*-S at Bouckaert International and then backed it up with the CCI4*-S at The Event at TerraNova on 27 March, the fifth Qualifier. Two runs, two wins, both times adding nothing but a little cross-country time to his dressage.
The TerraNova performance rated at HPR 96, the strongest of the three comeback wins. It was also Loach's first appearance on the Open leaderboard, having not contested any of the 2025 Qualifiers. TerraNova was a 26-entry field, so the win carried 50 points on the large Qualifier scale rather than 40. A strong return, and points banked early.
Julie Wolfert & SSH Playboy made their FEI return at The Event at Rebecca Farm, the 15th Qualifier, after 15 months out with a broken fetlock. Wolfert travelled all the way from Bucyrus, Kansas, with thanks to a Rebecca Farm grant. They sat fourth after dressage on 35.9, then produced the only clear cross-country round to move to the front, and sealed it with a clear show jumping round for a final score of 47.9.
Wolfert had been laughing off predictions of a win, given the horse had not run at the level in 15 months. The plan was not to chase the gelding's usual pace but to let him find it. He did.
