From meticulously maintained arenas to the timeless natural landscape, Morven Park has long been a favorite among top riders. "The surfaces are beautiful. They have walking paths for the horses, barns, and this really old turf with beautiful trees," Bishop said. "It&rsquo;s really the only place like it in North America." Much of the talk over the weekend centered around the park's unique combination of history and state-of-the-art facilities created an ideal setting for the launch of the US Equestrian Open. David O'Connor, who we speak to at the end of the podcast, described it a possible World Games venue in the future.&nbsp;
The US Equestrian Open: A New Era for Eventing
The launch of the US Equestrian Open marks a new era for American eventing, bringing continuity and structure to the sport with 18 calendar events leading to a final showdown at Morven Park in 2025.&nbsp;
This weekend, we were offered a glimpse into the future of the series, with stories emerging around top riders like Hannah Sue Hollberg, Jenny Brannigan, and Emily Beshear.&nbsp;
Riders to Watch: Hannah Sue Hollberg, Jenny Brannigan, and Emily Beshear
Hannah Sue Hollberg and her mount, Business Ben, were among the main contenders after Friday's dressage and Saturday's cross-country phases. Hollberg's bold, fast round on Saturday showed her intent to take the lead, as she and Business Ben demonstrated their partnership's potential. However, in an unfortunate twist of fate - which probably sums up the season Hannah Sue is having, Business Ben was withdrawn before the final show jumping phase due to a minor injury. "It was tough news to hear," Byrne said. "We were all rooting for them."
Jenny Brannigan also had her fair share of drama, as a mistake at the 13th fence during cross-country knocked her down the leaderboard. However, her exceptional show jumping skills allowed her and Connery to recover and secure a sixth-place finish, ensuring some Series points.
The star of the weekend was Emily Beshear, riding the 15-year-old Rio de Janeiro. Beshear's calm and calculated stadium jumping on Sunday earned her a clear round - and when Ema Klugman had one down, it meant Emily had won her first CCI4*-S. "The horse just looked like he was saying, &lsquo;Okay, there's another jump,&rsquo; and it was all so easy," Bishop said of the winning round. Beshear, who has long been a respected figure in the sport, secured her first four-star win after 34 attempts at the level, a testament to her perseverance and dedication.
New Faces and Rising Talent
The series not only highlights established stars but also gives fans a reason to follow up-and-coming talent. Ema Klugman and Arden Wildasin both delivered standout performances, finishing second and third, respectively. Klugman, riding RF Redfern, had one down while Wildasin's Billy Beaufort made a debut at the level, showing that they are riders to watch as the series progresses.
Looking Ahead: The Road to the US Equestrian Open Final
With Morven Park in the rearview mirror, all eyes are on the next two events in the series: Bouckaert and Terra Nova. Riders like Philip Dutton, Boyd Martin, and Will Coleman are expected to join the fray, adding even more excitement to the competition. "We are tracking these riders in a way we haven't in the past," Bishop said. "It's exciting to see how it all unfolds."

The Review Show | Morven Park | Eventing

It was a nail-biting finish today to conclude the US Equestrian Open&rsquo;s first qualifier. It was the clear round today that ensured Emily Mastervich Beshear and Rio de Janeiro clinched the win &ndash; but this was a win built over three phases. They started the weekend with a 34.4 dressage test to sit in third. They delivered a steady cross-country round yesterday, clear jumping and within the fastest five. Today, they maintained their 2024 form and jumped their fifth clear from six internationals.
Emily took over the ride on this 15-year-old horse last year from her son Nicholas, and she now has three wins from their first six events together. A milestone win too, after 33 previous runs at this level, they have their first CCI4*-S win. And a milestone for the US Equestrian Open &ndash; the first points of the season are on the board. When we arrived at Morven this morning, we got the unfortunate news of the withdrawal of overnight leader&nbsp;Hannah Sue Hollberg and Business Ben. Hannah Sue, who had led the field after cross-country, was forced to withdraw due to a minor, superficial injury to Business Ben. While the injury was not severe, the decision to withdraw was made as a precautionary measure, ending what looked like it was going to be a big breakthrough moment for this still-new combination. It opened the door to a jump-off style finish between Ema Klugman and Emily Mastervich Beshear &ndash; Ema was 3.9 penalties ahead, so her rail down meant the final standings were decided by just 0.1 penalty.
<h3>Final Standings: Emily&rsquo;s Clear Round Secures the Win</h3>
Beshear and Rio de Janeiro maintained their composure and executed a perfect clear round in the show jumping phase, continuing their impressive form from earlier events this year (now three wins in their last four internationals). <h3>Eye-Catcher:</h3>
Arden Wildasin was excellent this weekend across a number of sections, but arguably, the clear here on the final day with her new partner Billy Beaufort was the highlight. It is her third stadium clear of her career at this level, and in a tight field, it was enough to secure a podium finish.
<h3>What&rsquo;s Next for the US Equestrian Open?</h3>
With the first eventing qualifier now complete, attention turns to the two remaining events of this year &ndash; Bouckaert in a couple of weeks (October 25th-27th) and TerraNova in November (November 13th-17th).
We estimate that it is going to take 200+ points to secure the series prize money. Emily is off the mark, and a new series is underway.

Emily Mastervich Beshear Wins the First US Equestrian Open Qualifier 

The first qualifier of the US Equestrian Open is heating up, with Hannah Sue Hollberg taking over the lead after an impressive cross-country round aboard Business Ben. The 14-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, previously campaigned by Allison Springer, has been steadily building a partnership with Hannah Sue behind-the-scenes, and today, they pressed the button. They delivered the fastest round of the day (4.4 penalties) and sit as the overnight leader with a rail in hand on Ema Klugman. Hannah Sue&rsquo;s lead gives her some breathing room, but the final phase at Morven, after a real speed and stamina test today, is no walk in the park. Ema Klugman and RF Redfern are sitting in second with a score of 42.9, followed closely by Emily Mastervich Beshear with Rio De Janeiro, Erin Kanara with Charmed Victory and Arden Wildasin with Billy Beaufort&nbsp;. Updated Win Chances for the Top 5 Riders
With just the show jumping phase left, EquiRatings&rsquo; predictive models have recalculated the win chances for the top five combinations. We call it Prediction Center - a statistical model that forecasts the results of major eventing competitions before and during the event. It simulates the competition 10,000 times, and updates its projected leaderboard. That means, based on the records of all of these horses, their experience at the level, their current score etc. If we ran this competition 10,000 times, Hannah Sue wins 56% of the time and Ema wins 36% of the time. That doesn&rsquo;t leave much room for the others. Can it happen that it&rsquo;s Emily Mastervich Beshear? Of course. It&rsquo;s about a one-in-fourteen chance.&nbsp;

We do know that the last time Business Ben jumped clear in the stadium jumping was back in 2020. What we don&rsquo;t know is what Hannah Sue has been doing behind the scenes. They have focused a huge amount of their training in this phase and they can afford at least one to take the win. Verdict: One down and a win. </li>

They arrive here off the back of a clear round (and a win) in the CCI3*S at Plantation Field. They have knocked just three rails in the last 8 international rounds. Worth noting that they had a rail in both their CCI4*-S rounds. Verdict: Clear to keep the pressure on </li>

They jumped clear last time out at Aiken at this level &ndash; with all of their other clears coming at 3* level, both with Emily and Nicholas. Verdict: Clear to keep the podium finish </li>

Today was a big day for Charmed Victory and they delivered in style. The Stadium Jumping is a more challenging phase for them &ndash; they have had two down in three of their last four internationals. If they can keep it to single rail, it will be a good result.

Hannah Sue Hollberg Means Business

The first phase of the first US Equestrian Open qualifier is complete and we prepare now for the influential Morven Park cross country course. Jennie Brannigan leads with Connory (Stable name: Sean). Our Prediction Center had them as the pre-event favourites and they maintain that position after the first phase but it&rsquo;s worth noting that this will be only their second international run after an injury at Boekelo this time last year. The time penalties tomorrow are going to have a huge impact on the leaderboard &ndash; 101 combinations have set out on the cross-country track and only three have made the time.

Hannah Sue Hollberg and Business Ben are in second place, 0.3 points (less than a second) behind.&nbsp;Allison Springer rode Business Ben until the end of last year so tomorrow will be first time we them as a combination at this level. <img src="https://usef-admin.fly.dev/assets/b4cef382-9f9b-41c4-8bb7-00fb74666c44?width=1080&amp;height=1080" alt="Leaders After Dressage">
Given the challenge that this course is going to present, it is unusual to be drawn to a 15 year old horse who has only one run at the level &ndash; at Stable View this year. Rio de Janeiro for Emily Mastervich Beshear has two wins already this season at CCI3*-S but most importantly, is fast. On our ratings, using a concept called TSP (Top Speed Percentage), we track every horse that they have taken on in their last ten runs, and track how many they have been faster than. On that metric, Rio de Janeiro is the fastest horse in the field &ndash; outpacing 90% of opponents.

There are points available for the top 8 horses (qualifiers with more than 25 starters give place points all the way to 10th place). Mia Farley has Invictus and BGS Calculated Chaos both in the class and both well placed. Both are reliable horses and with points available for each horse, a good Saturday will leave her well placed after the opening leg in the Series.

‘Sean’ Connory leads at Morven

Morven Park: A Venue Steeped in History Morven Park has long been a cornerstone in the eventing calendar, and this year's competition adds another chapter to its rich history. This marks the 10th CCI4*-S at Morven Park since 2008, cementing its place as a venue of choice for top-tier eventing.
Records on the Line As riders and horses gear up for the challenge, several intriguing statistics set the stage for potential record-breaking performances:

The Series features the three Olympic disciplines of eventing, dressage and jumping. The US Equestrian Open Series will be broadcast live with all qualifiers in this three-disciplined series to be streamed exclusively on the USEF Network powered by ClipMyHorse.
The series opener kicks off in October with the eventing at Morven Park, VA. hosting the first of the 18 qualifiers in the series.
We&rsquo;ll start the new year with the first of 20 qualifiers in the dressage series, with the first qualifier to be held in&nbsp;Thermal, CA. in January 2025.
The jumping series will take place at the prestigious grounds of&nbsp;Wellington International, the premier equestrian destination in Wellington, FL. in March 2025, during WEF Week 12, featuring the $750,000 Rolex Grand Prix.
