There wasn&rsquo;t much time to catch a breath after Boyd Martin lifted the trophy at Morven Park. Just two weeks later, the 2026 US Equestrian Open of Eventing Series was already underway, with two qualifiers completed before the winter break.&nbsp;
As the Series resumes at Bouckaert International on March 5, now is the perfect moment to catch up on the story so far.

<h2 dir="ltr">Qualifier 1: Bouckaert International (October 24, 2025)</h2>
The 2026 Series opened at Bouckaert Farm in Fairburn, Georgia, with nine combinations chasing a maximum 40 points. This venue is one of the toughest time tracks on the calendar. In 13 years of the CCI4*, only four combinations had ever made the cross-country time (just 2% of all starters).
After a difficult start to 2025 for Lucienne Bellissimo and Dyri, with two unlucky runs prompting a tactical step back, Bellissimo rebuilt Dyri&rsquo;s confidence at lower levels. Four consecutive wins at 2* and 3* followed. Bouckaert marked their return to 4*, and they delivered.

It was their <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/bellissimo-and-dyri-make-it-five-in-a-row-at-bouckaert" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fifth consecutive international victory</a> and Bellissimo&rsquo;s eighth win of 2025. That win made her the British rider with the most international wins this year, ahead of Paris Olympian's Laura Collett, Ros Canter, and Tom McEwen (more on Bellissimo&rsquo;s British flag later!)
<a href="https://podfollow.com/the-us-equestrian-open-podcast/episode/a3215b228cb986aba67a1ffed04560f1a7a9da59" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kate Sand and Top Shelf</a> finished second with a double clear while Bruce Davidson Jr. and Cerafino D completed the podium in third.

<h2 dir="ltr">Qualifier 2: The Event at TerraNova (November 14, 2025)</h2>
TerraNova served as both the second qualifier of the series and final FEI eventing competition in the US for 2025. The headline arrival was Will Coleman and Diabolo -&nbsp; the star combination returning to 4* competition after injury had kept them out of the Paris Olympics and most of the 2025 season.

Diabolo returned to the level with a dressage score of 26.1 which tied the second-best test ever recorded at the venue - beaten only by Coleman's own Chin Tonic HS in 2023. A double clear across the remaining two phases <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/terranova-closes-the-year" target="_blank" rel="noopener">maintained their lead from start to finish.</a>&nbsp;It was Diabolo's third 4* win in a row, following victories at Cosequin Kentucky and Plantation Field (both in 2024). Coleman finished the event with 60 series points thanks to an additional fifth place with Fahrenheit Addict.
Lucienne Bellissimo and&nbsp;Dyri came second and Kitsch Couture HPK finished 8th to add an additional 40 points to her score to maintain the lead.
Waylon Roberts and Fernhill Salt Lake completed the podium in third. Roberts had entered with the highest EquiRatings Top Speed Percentage (TSP) in the field, and Fernhill Salt Lake proved the stats right. He produced the fastest cross-country round of the weekend and he was the only horse to make the time. It was also the first completion at four-star level for the pair after two previous starts at the level.
The other standout story of the weekend was Meg Pellegrini, who made her four-star debut with three horses. Dondante finished 7th with a double clear, Falcon Crown Z delivered the second-best dressage test in the field (26.9) before finishing 9th, and Cooley Wish Upon a Star added a 12th. Pellegrini and her string of horses will almost certainly be a story to follow as the season unfolds.

<h2 dir="ltr">A New Flag at the Top</h2>
After TerraNova, the Series paused for the winter break. While competition was quiet, the leaderboard still saw a significant change at the top of the standings.
After officially becoming a United States citizen in late 2025,<a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/new-flag-for-the-frontrunner" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Lucienne Bellissimo now represents Team USA</a>. Bellissimo had opened the Series as a British rider. She will resume it in 2026 as an American: still leading the standings, but under a new flag.

The Series resumes at Bouckaert Farm next week for Qualifier 3, and the field is shaping up to be one of the venue&rsquo;s strongest so far. Bellissimo leads the standings, but several big names are set to line up. The added twist? This will be the first qualifier of the 2026 Series to attract 25 or more combinations, unlocking the higher points allocation.&nbsp;

<h2 dir="ltr">Dressage: Werth Rewrites the Record Books in Wellington</h2>
Next Qualifier: Palm Beach Derby 2/25 + Del Mar Dressage Opener 2/26 | The Final: Desert Dressage, Thermal CA (November)
Isabell Werth returned to Wellington for the first time in 16 years and immediately rewrote the record books. The World No. 2 and Special Blend 3 scored 82.660% &mdash; the highest mark in US Equestrian Open of Dressage history &mdash; on the partnership's FEI Grand Prix Freestyle debut, backed by a 90.120% artistic score and 10s from three judges for music.

Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu and Jaccardo earned second on 79.250% in the 12-year-old's first Friday night, and Julio Mendoza Loor and Jewel's Goldstrike rounded out the podium at 78.165%.
"This freestyle is really, really difficult and I was not sure what Special would do because he's not experienced in these kinds of atmospheres, but he was very focused," said Werth. "This crowd was so supportive and started to clap, which is something special. That end to a test is a feeling I really enjoy, and it's how you know why you're still in the saddle in a competition."

<h2 dir="ltr">Show Jumping: McLain Ward and High Star Hero Light Up WEF Week 7</h2>
The US Equestrian Open Final: Wellington, Week 12 | Countdown: 4 Weeks
The Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) has passed its halfway point, and the picture at the top of the sport is coming into sharper focus. Saturday night's CSI5* $500,000 Modon Grand Prix produced a winner who needs no introduction on home soil and results that will echo all the way to Week 12.
<h3 dir="ltr">McLain Ward &amp; High Star Hero&nbsp;</h3>
McLain Ward claimed the Week 7 Grand Prix aboard High Star Hero, a result that lands him in rare company even by his own exceptional standards. This is the fourth time Ward has won this exact Grand Prix with his previous three victories all coming with the iconic HH Azur (2016, 2017, and 2020). As a combination, this was Ward and High Star Hero&rsquo;s fourth CSI5* 1.60m win together, following previous victories at the World Cup of Arcada and two Grand Prix Qualifiers in the Hamptons.

With just over four weeks until the Rolex US Equestrian Open Final, Ward will be defending momentum and arriving with a horse in form. Home advantage, a proven track record at this event, and a clear jump-off performance on Friday night: this combination are going to be major contenders for a home win.
<h3 dir="ltr">Mark Bluman &amp; Landon de Nyze</h3>
Second place went to Mark Bluman and Landon de Nyze and the story behind it makes the podium even more impressive. Bluman and Landon only became a combination in December, less than two months ago. They have already won two 1.55m classes together. Friday night was their first 5* Grand Prix together, and they walked away with a podium finish.
New partnerships at the 5* level rarely produce results this quickly. The jump from building a partnership to landing a top-two finish in a Grand Prix of this calibre in under two months warrants close attention heading into the back half of the WEF season.
<h3 dir="ltr">Shane Sweetnam &amp; James Kann Cruz</h3>
The bronze position went to Shane Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz. Friday&rsquo;s result was their 20th individual 5* 1.60m podium finish together, with eight of those arriving in the past twelve months alone.
Their jump-off record borders on the extraordinary: 18 clears from 21 rounds at the 5* 1.60m level (86%), translating to 19 podium finishes from those jump-off appearances. When Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz make it to a jump-off at this level, a top-three finish has become the expectation rather than the exception.
<h3 dir="ltr">The Bigger Picture</h3>
There are four CSI5* Grand Prix during the WEF season: Weeks 5, 7, 9, and 12. With Weeks 5 and 7 now complete, there are just two more chances to win big before the Final. Saturday night marked another pit stop but Week 12 remains the ultimate destination.

The first qualifier of the 2026 US Equestrian Open of Eventing is one week away, and the anticipation building around the CCI4*-S at Bouckaert Farm is well earned. The entry list has been confirmed<a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/the-open-weekly" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> (check out our deep dive in last week Open Weekly)</a> and with 28 combinations set to line up in Georgia, this is already shaping up to be one of the stronger editions of this event.
Bouckaert Farm has been hosting the CCI4*-S since 2013. Across 15 previous runnings of the class, exactly 280 horses have started. That means the venue is set to welcome its 300th (and beyond) CCI4*-S starter in the coming days. For an event that describes horses as being at its heart, it is a milestone worth marking.
The 28-entry field clears the 25-combination threshold required for a high-scoring qualifier and provides some cushion against the inevitable pre-event withdrawals. Last year&rsquo;s running of this event drew 19 starters, which means this year the field is deeper and the stakes are correspondingly higher.
No name carries more significance into this weekend than <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/new-flag-for-the-frontrunner" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lucienne Bellissimo.</a> The Series leader arrives at Bouckaert with two horses and a lead to defend.&nbsp;Bellissimo brings Kitsch Couture HPK and four-star debutant Qatar M. It is a debut that Bellissimo herself has been building toward, and her excitement ahead of the run has been visible.&nbsp;

The Open Weekly: Werth Breaks Records While Ward Wins at WEF

The Rolex US Equestrian Open Final of Jumping format is straightforward: jump clear in Round One and you're in the jump-off. Make the jump-off and you're normally in the top 10.&nbsp;But rails fall, turns go wrong, and the fastest round doesn't always belong to the favourite. The podium has no guarantee. Unless you're Shane Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz.

Just over a week ago in <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/ward-wins-in-wellington-again" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wellington's Week 7 CSI5* 160 class</a>, Shane Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz (or 'Gizmo' to his friends) did it again: a clear jump-off round, a third-place finish, another podium added to a record that is beginning to look less like form and more like a law of the sport.
From 21 jump-off appearances at CSI5* 160 level, Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz have produced 18 clear rounds - an 86% strike rate. This is the second-highest clear rate the sport has seen at this level since 2010.

They have stood on the podium 19 times at this level. Eighteen of those podiums came from clear jump-offs. The sole exception was the Rolex Grand Prix of Dublin, where only Laura Kraut jumped clear in Round One, making a four-fault round still good enough for the podium.&nbsp;

So as Week 12 of Wellington draws nearer, Sweetnam's task is far simpler than any of his rivals: deliver in the first round and the rest will take care of itself.

<h3 dir="ltr">Form That Demands Attention</h3>
The Kentucky-based Irish combination arrived in Wellington in the kind of form that makes others take notice. James Kann Cruz, the 13-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Kannan x Cruising), has been operating at a level that borders on the extraordinary. As Sweetnam reflected in the WEF Week 7 press conference:

"He hasn't knocked a fence in a Grand Prix since Dublin in August, and that's ridiculous. I'm blessed to have a horse that good. He really loves his job."

The numbers back up the sentiment. James Kann Cruz currently sits as the highest-rated Irish horse on the EquiRatings Elo at 772 and his peak of 775 makes him the highest-rated Irish horse ever recorded. A record like that isn't built on a single standout week. It is built on years of quiet, relentless consistency at the very top of the sport.&nbsp;

Sweetnam is respected throughout for his feel and his composure. A fierce competitor who wears it quietly. When he and James Kann Cruz step into a jump-off arena, expectation shifts.
Third feels normal. Second feels common. The conversation now is whether he can win.

<h3 dir="ltr">A Contender Peaking at the Right Time</h3>
Wellington has a way of rewarding combinations who arrive sharp and assured. James Kann Cruz fits that profile precisely: a horse in his prime, proven at this height, and one who appears to thrive when the atmosphere is biggest and the margin for error is smallest.
His numbers hold under scrutiny whether in individual five-star Grand Prix competition or on championship teams. The consistency is not contextual. It travels.
But in Week 12, none of that history matters until their first round is complete. Everything&mdash;the statistics, the Elo rating, the podium record&mdash;is conditional on one clear round. Just 80 seconds.
The Rolex US Equestrian Open Final may not be won in Round One. But for Shane Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz, it may very well be secured there.

Three days is all that stands between us and the start of the 2026 US Equestrian Open eventing season. After months of buildup, form-watching, and series speculation, Bouckaert is finally here. Later this week, watch out for our full preview article and fan guide to help you get the most out of the action.
Before we get there, the weekend just gone offered a reminder of who is on form. The $100,000 LiftMaster Grand Prix Eventing Showcase presented by Taylor Harris Insurance Service saw several combinations with serious Open ambitions.
Phillip Dutton and Denim won the Showcase by going inside the time cross country - one of only two combinations in the entire field to do so. Denim finished 6th at the US Equestrian Open Final last year and placed top 10 at each of the three qualifiers he contested. They start the new year on top form and as major contenders for this year&rsquo;s Series and Final
Second place went to Elisa Wallace and the ten-year-old Lissavorra Quality. Wallace and this horse are not known as a fast combination, yet they crossed the finish line with just 4.8 time penalties. On a day when the clock was tough, this was an exceptional result. 20 penalties at the US Equestrian Open Final and a mixed 2025 season overall makes this performance all the more significant as a reset heading into the new season. If the cross country speed shown here carries into the qualifier season, Lissavorra Quality is one to watch as she develops.
Third place went to the Australian pair Sophia Hill and Humble Glory - the other combination inside the time. Ge&ntilde;ay Vaughn is the new US Equestrian Open of Dressage Series leader.&nbsp;A coast-to-coast double header to open 2026 delivered great sport, excitement, and personal bests, but it was Vaughn&rsquo;s weekend in California that changed the Series picture most.
HITS Del Mar Dressage Opener
California's Ge&ntilde;ay Vaughn and Gino had a weekend to remember at Del Mar. The pair opened with a personal best in Friday's Grand Prix before going on to claim the Freestyle Qualifier the following day with 75.955%. On the Series leaderboard, Vaughn moves to first overall with 45 points. The result also carries significant World Cup implications.&nbsp;

The victory draws Vaughn level with Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu and Jaccardo on 57 points in the North American League standings, placing her second behind Christian Simonson on Indian Rock, whose 60 points have all but confirmed his place at the Final in Fort Worth, Texas this April.&nbsp;
Vaughn's spot is not yet secure, however. Her three-score average sits below Fraser-Beaulieu's, who looks well-positioned for one of the three North American starting places. The third berth will be decided at the final qualifier at Wellington's Global Dressage Festival in two weeks, where Kevin Kohmann (54 points) and Benjamin Ebeling (52 points) could each tie both riders with a win. All ties are broken by the highest average.
Brittney Eastgate (formerly Simpson) was also in the ribbons aboard Kartsevo Goldfinch, posting a combination-best 72.020% for second place in the Freestyle.&nbsp;

On the East Coast, Sweden's Tinne Vilhelmson Silfven delivered a commanding performance aboard Hyatt, a 13-year-old KWPN mare, taking the win with 78.000%. Germany's Michael Klimke and Harmony's Fado found themselves in second with a personal best of 74.770%, a result that moves Klimke into tied 7th on the Series leaderboard with 25 points. Susan Dutta rounded out the three-horse field in third and now sits on 23 points, placing her in tied 9th overall.

The Rolex US Equestrian Open Final: Wellington, Week 12 | Countdown: 3 Weeks
Last week was a strong one for US riders. At WEF Week 8, Team USA defended their title in the Wellington CSIO4* Nations Cup, and 24 hours later Karl Cook topped the Grand Prix podium.
The US squad of Karl Cook, Marilyn Little, Callie Schott, and anchor McLain Ward faced eight other nations. With Cook, Little, and Schott all jumping clear, Ward sat out the first round.&nbsp;
When he was called upon in the decider, Ward delivered. Riding Jordan Molga M (pictured below), a partnership still gaining mileage at this level, he produced a composed clear to secure gold ahead of Ireland, with Canada finishing third.

The victory marked back-to-back Nations Cup wins for the U.S. in Wellington and the nation&rsquo;s 11th title in the 25-year history of the event.
While the team result made the headlines, Marilyn Little with La Contessa and Callie Schott riding Garant (pictured below) were the standout performers, each producing double-clear rounds. At Nations Cup level, that kind of consistency is exceptional and it was the foundation of the win.&nbsp;

Sunday&rsquo;s $200,000 JTWG Inc. Grand Prix came down to a five-horse jump-off. Karl Cook and Signe Ostby&rsquo;s Candy claimed the win with a bold inside turn to the final fence, leaving out a stride to gaining the edge. Ireland&rsquo;s Darragh Kenny (Colibelle Hero Z) and Shane Sweetnam (Coriaan van Klapscheut Z) finished second and third.
Cook&rsquo;s golden weekend, Nations Cup gold on Saturday, Grand Prix victory on Sunday, comes just three weeks before the Rolex US Equestrian Open Final. <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/ward-wins-in-wellington-again" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McLain Ward is carrying momentum from Week 7</a>; now Cook has firmly entered the conversation. The picture is sharpening. The combinations capable of winning Week 12 are making themselves known, one result at a time. Week 9 is next.

The US Equestrian Open Eventing Series is back at Bouckaert Farm in Fairburn, Georgia. It is the first qualifier of 2026 and the third event in the series, and this venue has built up quite a history since the four-star short first ran here in 2013. Thirteen years, multiple editions per year in some cases, and a winners list that has some big names. Below is every winner on record.

<h3 class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]">Previous Winners Returning This Week</h3>
Lucienne Bellissimo is the most recent winner, having taken the 2025 Autumn edition with&nbsp;Dyri. This result formed part of her series lead and marked Dyri's return to four-star short competition after stepping back due to a confidence knock earlier in the year. She returns this week with Kitsch Couture HPK.
Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Double Sixteen won this event twelve months ago and return as major contenders. HSH Double Sixteen is a very fast horse, and with inside-the-time rates at this venue sitting at just 2%, that speed is a huge asset. If the optimum time is as demanding as it has been in recent years, they are likely to be well-placed. Caroline also brings HSH Connor and King's Especiale this weekend.
Buck Davidson won here in 2017 with the iconic Copper Beach. Though his connection to this venue runs deeper than that single result. Buck has 18 starts at Bouckaert, more than any other rider in the event's history and 5 clear of the next most frequent starter, Nilson Moreira Da Silva (13). This weekend's two entries, Cerafino D and Cooley Candyman, will take his career total here to 20. He also holds the record for most cross-country clears at this venue with 12, and the venue dressage record of 25.1 set with Carlevo in 2022.

Annie and Diarm highlight how the season has evolved into a fascinating showdown between US riders and a strong international contingent arriving to challenge them.

One of the standout performances came from Callie Schott, who delivered another reliable round, jumping double clear, as part of the winning effort.

The entry list includes series leader Lucienne Bellissimo, Caroline Pamukcu, Tamie Smith and defending Open champion Boyd Martin, who arrives with an entire string of competitive horses.

Five Storylines Discussed on This Week’s US Equestrian Open Podcast

Personal bests, high scores, and a celebrity cameo made for an electric night at the Adequan&reg; Global Dressage Festival&rsquo;s Friday Night Stars. Under the warm Florida evening sky, Adrienne Lyle and Helix delivered a stunning performance, earning a career-best 80.325% to claim victory. Anna Marek and Fayvel followed closely in second, while P.J. Rizvi rounded out the podium in an inspiring comeback ride aboard her non-warmblood mount, Vanilla Ice.
<h2 dir="ltr">Adrienne Lyle &amp; Helix &mdash; A Combination-Best Performance</h2>
Lyle and Zen Elite Equestrian Center&rsquo;s Helix put on a masterclass under the lights. Their winning score of 80.325% &mdash; a combination best &mdash; marked a three-point improvement from <a href="https://www.usequestrianopen.org/stories/Hendricks-Drombusch-OLD-Remain-Undefeated-in-Wellington-Freestyles">their last outing at this same venue</a>, where they scored 77.280%. The Paris 2024 pair looked more composed than ever, with their freestyle victory coming on the heels of a strong Grand Prix win the day before.

Their degree of difficulty averaged 9.18, and their piaffe-passage transitions&mdash;an area of focus this season&mdash;earned a 9 from one judge.
It&rsquo;s not often you see a perfect 10 in dressage, but Lyle did just that, with the Judge at B awarding a 10 for music and interpretation.&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Anna Marek &amp; Fayvel&mdash;A Strong Second Place</h2>
After withdrawing from competition just a week ago in Ocala, Marek and Cynthia Davila&rsquo;s Fayvel returned in top form, earning a 78.785%&mdash;just shy of their personal best (78.995%). Their freestyle was electric, set to a soundtrack featuring &ldquo;BOOM&rdquo; by X Ambassadors and &ldquo;Coincidance&rdquo; by Handsome Driver.

Marek, a Paris Olympic shortlist rider, took risks with a challenging floor plan, including a half-circle of two-time changes straight into one-time changes. Fayvel&rsquo;s power surged in the final extended trot, leading to a slight bobble that cost them a few marks, but it didn&rsquo;t overshadow an otherwise stellar performance.
&ldquo;I can take risks, and we made this freestyle with so many combinations in a row. As difficult as it is, he&rsquo;s still so easy to ride,&rdquo; Marek explained. &ldquo;I ride the brake a little bit and say, &lsquo;Not so much, buddy!&rsquo;&rdquo;
With this performance, both Marek and Lyle remain firmly in contention for a US team spot at the World Cup Final in April.
<h2 dir="ltr">P.J. Rizvi &amp; Vanilla Ice &mdash; A Comeback Story for the Books</h2>

In perhaps the most wholesome moment of the night, P.J. Rizvi and Vanilla Ice finished third in their first-ever CDI together, scoring 76.585%. The result was emotional in more ways than one &mdash; this was Rizvi&rsquo;s first CDI in six years after a life-altering accident, one that left her being told she&rsquo;d never ride, walk, or drive again. Simply getting back in the saddle was the goal &mdash; third place was just the cherry on top.
&ldquo;My goal was to prove to myself that I could get back on a horse, and he&rsquo;s a complete confidence builder,&rdquo; Rizvi said. &ldquo;I really pushed hard for this, and I honestly did it for pure fun. It was our first CDI and my personal best score. I&rsquo;m in shock. I heard a lot of clapping and screaming; this was so much fun.&rdquo;
Their icy freestyle music featured &ldquo;Cold as Ice&rdquo; by Foreigner and &ldquo;Ice Ice Baby&rdquo; by Vanilla Ice (Robert van Winkle)&mdash;who was <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DFy82_budDv/?hl=en">in attendance</a> as a personal friend of Rizvi&rsquo;s and also helped to present awards.
As the final ride of the night, the crowd was already buzzing, but their energy only intensified for Rizvi. Her freestyle had spectators on their feet, clapping and cheering &mdash; a rare sight in the traditionally reserved sport of dressage.

With the Adequan&reg; Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) behind us, the US Equestrian Open of Dressage shifts into a new phase. Riders now face geographically dispersed events, a significant mid-year break, and tough decisions around international competition.

<h3>The Geography Game: Moving Beyond the Palm Beach Bubble</h3>
The power of Wellington is hard to overstate. Of the 29 riders who have completed at least two qualifiers&mdash;the minimum needed to be eligible for the Finals&mdash;21 of them have competed in at least one AGDF qualifier. If the series ended today, a large percentage of qualified riders would trace their points directly back to Wellington. That density of opportunity gave early-season competitors a meaningful head start.
Now, with just five of the remaining eleven qualifiers taking place in Florida, the series shifts into a more decentralized phase.

Current series leader Anna Marek is perfectly poised to capitalize on this. Sitting at 88 points after five qualifiers, Ocala-based Marek is shifting her full focus to the series after missing a World Cup Finals berth. With one more high-performing qualifier, she could become the first rider to surpass 100 points, likely securing her spot as series leader heading into the Finals.
In contrast, Germany&rsquo;s Evelyn Eger (85 points) may see her second-place standing slip as she heads back to Europe. Her points total is now fixed, leaving her vulnerable to riders who remain active domestically.
<h3>The International Gamble: Risks vs. Rewards</h3>
Several prominent contenders&mdash;including Adrienne Lyle (5th in the standings), Kevin Kohmann (8th), and Ge&ntilde;ay&nbsp;Vaughn (16th)&mdash;are currently in Basel for the World Cup Final, kicking off Europe's outdoor dressage season. For riders with aspirations beyond the US Equestrian Open, international competitions in Europe offer prestige and national team opportunities for events like the Pan American Games and the Olympics.
Yet, these benefits come at a cost. Series points can only be earned domestically, placing riders who choose extended European campaigns at significant risk. Vaughn, particularly, faces a pivotal decision: return to the limited West Coast events or potentially miss out on critical qualifying points.
<h3>On the Bubble: Who's Safe and Who's Not?</h3>
The Series Finals in Thermal, California, boasts a significant $200,000 prize pool, reserved for the top 18 riders after qualifying events. While riders like Marek, Eger, and Karen Lipp (70 points) seem securely qualified, several top-scoring riders face uncertainty.
Lyle, despite holding the series' highest freestyle score (80.600%), sits precariously at 57 points with only three qualifiers completed. Similarly, Kohmann (79.240% PB, 52 points) and Vaughn (75.150% PB, 40 points) should comfortably qualify based on their performances so far&mdash;but only if they return home to actively compete in series qualifiers. Without prioritizing stateside events, their impressive resumes alone won't guarantee a spot in the Finals.
Also at risk are Ecuador&rsquo;s Julio Mendoza Loor (78.520% PB, 37 points) and Sweden&rsquo;s Tinne Vilhelmson Silfv&eacute;n (75.515% PB, 42 points), both heading to Europe for the summer season.
<h3>Quiet Weekends, Big Implications</h3>
Qualifier 14 might not feature a star-studded lineup, but its outcome could significantly impact the standings. Eline Eckroth, currently tied 11th with 49 points, can vault into fifth place with a win. Such weekends, quieter on paper, often profoundly influence the final leaderboard.

After Wellington: Navigating the New US Equestrian Open Landscape

The German rider and his 11-year-old Westphalian gelding have been nothing short of spectacular over the last 12 months, and as they prepare to defend their title, their record suggests they will be one of the biggest threats under the lights at WEF 12&rsquo;s finale week.
<h2>The Journey to the Top</h2>
Kukuk and Checker 47 have enjoyed a meteoric rise on the international circuit, with a string of top performances that have solidified their place among the sport&rsquo;s elite.
They started 2025 with a statement win in the WEF 3 NetJets CSI4* Grand Prix, setting the tone for what could become an exceptional campaign. Looking back at the past 12 months of their career, one of their biggest triumphs came in March 2024, when they captured the Rolex Grand Prix during WEF 12 at Wellington International. That win not only earned them one of the most coveted titles in North America but also cemented Kukuk&rsquo;s reputation as a master tactician in high-pressure situations. Later in the year, they went on to achieve their biggest career milestone to date&mdash;winning the Individual Olympic Gold Medal in Paris 2024.
Since that career-defining night, Kukuk has strategically managed Checker 47&rsquo;s schedule, ensuring the gelding peaks at the right moments.&nbsp;
<h2> A Champion's Mindset</h2>
Speaking about his approach to WEF 12, Kukuk remains laser-focused on the five-star offerings as he spends his first full season competing in Wellington. "Checker has jumped three Grand Prix events here and three clear rounds. That&rsquo;s a great sign heading into Rolex Finale week," Kukuk stated.
Despite finishing as runner-up to Kent Farrington in a recent Wellington Grand Prix, Kukuk was quick to recognize the strengths of his mount. "My basic instinct told me after I came out that it wasn&rsquo;t enough today, and I knew exactly who was going to beat me," he remarked, acknowledging the competitive depth in Wellington&rsquo;s elite fields.
<h2>Defending the Title at the Rolex US Equestrian Open</h2>
For Kukuk and Checker 47, the mission is clear: to defend their title in the $750,000 Rolex US Equestrian Open Rolex Grand Prix at WEF 12.
As the reigning Olympic Champion, Kukuk will not only be defending his Wellington title but also carrying the pressure of his recent gold medal success.&nbsp;
Kukuk will also be one of the biggest challengers from outside the United States looking to take on the Rolex US Equestrian Open Grand Prix. The top American riders, including former winners and rising stars, will be determined to keep the title on home soil, but Kukuk and Checker 47 have already proven they can beat the best in high-stakes environments.
As Wellington prepares to host this groundbreaking championship finale, Kukuk and Checker 47 are positioned to make history once again. Will they rise to the occasion under the Saturday Night Lights, or will a new champion emerge? The answer awaits at Wellington International in April.

Kukuk & Checker 47: The Biggest International Threat to the US Equestrian Open Grand Prix

This week&rsquo;s US Equestrian Open qualifier at the Adequan&reg; Global Dressage Festival brings two chances to earn valuable leaderboard points: the CDI Freestyle and the CDIO Freestyle&mdash;the latter doubling as a Nations Cup event, where riders compete for their country rather than just themselves.&nbsp;
With national pride and leaderboard points on the line, the CDIO has drawn the bigger field. And while the battle for top scores should be fierce, realistically, it&rsquo;s a fight for second place. Felicitas Hendricks is in a league of her own.

It&rsquo;s not just Hendricks&rsquo; personal best (79.105%) that makes her the overwhelming favorite &mdash; it&rsquo;s her consistency. With an average of 77.491%, she&rsquo;s not just leading; she&rsquo;s doing so with a cushion. For anyone to overtake her, it would take both an above-average, personal-best performance from a competitor and a rare underperformance from Hendricks and 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding, Drombusch OLD. That&rsquo;s a tough equation to bet against.
The one competitor who could put up a fight is fellow countrywoman Evelyn Eger, a rider who is currently leading the Series in a three-way tie. Eger and 12-year-old Oldenburg mare Tabledance 3 have an average of 73.771%, which is nearly four percentage points behind Hendricks. Their personal best of 77.085%, however, does put them within striking distance. That result came in May of last year, when she came fourth, behind Ingrid Klimke (3rd), Andrina Suter (2nd), and Isabell Werth (1st), the current FEI Dressage World No. 1.
If Eger can pull off an upset, she will outright lead the Series on a score of 60. But if the final results give a Hendricks-Eger 1-2, the leaderboard would again be tied, with both riders at 57.
While the CDIO Freestyle will be a battle for national pride, the smaller CDI 3* class is a different story. With just three entries, US rider Karen Lipp is the clear frontrunner.&nbsp;

As a frequent competitor in the Series qualifiers, Lipp has 30 points under her belt, meaning a win would guarantee she&rsquo;s the first rider to break the 50-point threshold. This would also vault her to the top of the leaderboard, where she&rsquo;d have sole possession of the number one spot&mdash;but likely only for a few hours, as the Nations Cup is scheduled to start immediately after the 3* concludes. Unless Hendricks and Eger both have wildly uncharacteristic days, it is unlikely Lipp will remain on top for long.
So, the real question: does anyone shake up the standings? Will Eger deliver a PB? Does Lipp get her moment at the top of the leaderboard &mdash; however brief?
Or are we simply living in a Drombusch world?
