The competition has already delivered plenty of drama across its first two legs, with US compatriots Sara Kozumplik and Emily Mastervich Beshear currently tied atop the series leaderboard at 40 points each. &nbsp;Beshear claimed victory in the series opener at Morven Park with Rio de Janeiro, and Kozumplik's took the top spot at Bouckaert International with Rock Phantom. 
Closely behind the co-leaders are Ema Klugman and in-form Christina Henriksen, both sitting in 3rd place with 35 points after strong outings at the previous qualifiers. Arden Wildasin and Janelle Fleming round out the top 5 on 30 points each.

TerraNova&rsquo;s Strong Field Led by Dutton's Duo
We are already seeing the impact of the series on the rider&rsquo;s planning - Kozumplik confirmed she would return with Rocky to TerraNova, despite this competition not being in their original schedule. EquiRatings&rsquo; analysts expect it is going to take a season points total of 200+ for series prizemoney and the benefit of these early points proved a key part in her decision. 
Much like at Bouckaert , if she is going to take the points, she is going to face a big challenge from Olympic veteran Phillip Dutton. In the last leg, Phillip led going into the final phase before an unfortunate elimination on cross-country due to a missed jump. &nbsp;He has two horses entered this time. 13 year old Quasi Cool &ndash; who started the CCI5* at Kentucky this year (33.8 dressage) and who has CCI4* short and long wins to his name and Azure &ndash; a horse that came from Ireland&rsquo;s Esib Power and who also has CCI5* experience (15th place finish at Kentucky this year) and CCI4*L win (Bromont 2023).

Just like last time out, Pre-competition predictions make him favourite for the win. Quasi Cool, who leads the <a href="https://prediction-centre.equiratings.com/competitions/terranova_4s_2024">prediction centre</a> with a 34% chance of victory and Azure, carrying 27% win chance. He would collect points for both horses and with a string that also contains Jewelent, Possante and Denim all at this level, he is one of the riders best equipped to challenge the overall series &ndash; but he can&rsquo;t let opportunities like this one slip by. He might well lead the series after this weekend and he will aim to stay there if he does. 
The rider that can stop him is Sara Kozumplik. She has 40 points on the board already and a win here would guarantee her top-spot at the turn of the year. The in-form Rock Phantom enters with 23% win chance. Expect them to start around the 30 mark, good chance of a clear in the show jumping and then it will come down to a time test.

The Challengers 
Sweden&rsquo;s Jennie Jarnstrom, who currently sits 11th in the series standings with 15 points after a solid sixth-place finish at Bouckaert International, brings two horses to TerraNova - Flower Girl, who sits with a 5% win chance and a 25% chance of a podium finish, as well as Splash Dance rated with a 3% win chance and 19% podium chance. If she can land points with both she will likely sit in Series top 5 after the weekend. &nbsp;
Hayden Wathen (USA) and Contestor enter the event with a 5% win chance despite having never competed at the level before. They had a good run and a podium finish at Tryon in September at CCI3*-S level. Another combination to watch is Andrew Robin Walker and SBT Barolo, who are returning to this level of the sport after a season primarily at 3* level after some time off. This pair have top 10 finishes at CCI4*S and CCI4*L level before that break so this weekend is a milestone comeback regardless of the result. EquiRatings make them a 19% podium chance. Rounding out the field are strong combinations including Briggs Surratt and Corture, Matthew Ulmer aboard Wellview Mister Lux, and Chris Newton riding Noble Discovery - all proven performers capable of breaking into the points.

This qualifier holds particular significance as athletes begin planning their 2025 campaigns. With the series culminating at Morven Park in October 2025, the results at TerraNova will influence how competitors will structure their upcoming season's schedule.

Fresh off a win in the CCI3*-S at Morven Park, Sara and Rock Phantom were ready to test themselves again at Bouckaert. In a pre-cross-country interview, Sara spoke passionately about the venue and how much she looked forward to giving it her all, despite Rock Phantom&rsquo;s recent neck surgery recovery. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not going to be hanging about,&rdquo; she declared, determined to put her foot down and show what her horse could do. At Morven Park in the CCI3*-S a couple of weeks ago, Christina delivered a controlled and composed performance (this horse is a top cross country horse) with Cisco's Calor Z, and finished second to Sara and Rick Phantom. While this may seem like an identical result, the big difference is that this time, Cisco's Calor Z has stepped up a level. It was his first time at CCI4*-S level and will we expect (ratings are generated every Tuesday by EquiRatings) secure their best career performance rating to date. Holding her own among seasoned competitors, Christina&rsquo;s performance left her just behind Sara, and her steady, intelligent ride through all three phases earned her valuable points toward the Open leaderboard.

The launch of the US Equestrian Open marks a new era for American eventing, bringing continuity and structure to the sport with 18 calendar events leading to a final showdown at Morven Park in 2025.&nbsp;
This weekend, we were offered a glimpse into the future of the series, with stories emerging around top riders like Hannah Sue Hollberg, Jenny Brannigan, and Emily Beshear.&nbsp;
Riders to Watch: Hannah Sue Hollberg, Jenny Brannigan, and Emily Beshear
Hannah Sue Hollberg and her mount, Business Ben, were among the main contenders after Friday's dressage and Saturday's cross-country phases. Hollberg's bold, fast round on Saturday showed her intent to take the lead, as she and Business Ben demonstrated their partnership's potential. However, in an unfortunate twist of fate - which probably sums up the season Hannah Sue is having, Business Ben was withdrawn before the final show jumping phase due to a minor injury. "It was tough news to hear," Byrne said. "We were all rooting for them."
Jenny Brannigan also had her fair share of drama, as a mistake at the 13th fence during cross-country knocked her down the leaderboard. However, her exceptional show jumping skills allowed her and Connery to recover and secure a sixth-place finish, ensuring some Series points.
The star of the weekend was Emily Beshear, riding the 15-year-old Rio de Janeiro. It was a nail-biting finish today to conclude the US Equestrian Open&rsquo;s first qualifier. It was the clear round today that ensured Emily Mastervich Beshear and Rio de Janeiro clinched the win &ndash; but this was a win built over three phases. They started the weekend with a 34.4 dressage test to sit in third. They delivered a steady cross-country round yesterday, clear jumping and within the fastest five. Today, they maintained their 2024 form and jumped their fifth clear from six internationals.
Emily took over the ride on this 15-year-old horse last year from her son Nicholas, and she now has three wins from their first six events together. A milestone win too, after 33 previous runs at this level, they have their first CCI4*-S win. And a milestone for the US Equestrian Open &ndash; the first points of the season are on the board. When we arrived at Morven this morning, we got the unfortunate news of the withdrawal of overnight leader&nbsp;Hannah Sue Hollberg and Business Ben. Hannah Sue, who had led the field after cross-country, was forced to withdraw due to a minor, superficial injury to Business Ben. While the injury was not severe, the decision to withdraw was made as a precautionary measure, ending what looked like it was going to be a big breakthrough moment for this still-new combination. It opened the door to a jump-off style finish between Ema Klugman and Emily Mastervich Beshear &ndash; Ema was 3.9 penalties ahead, so her rail down meant the final standings were decided by just 0.1 penalty.
<h3>Final Standings: Emily&rsquo;s Clear Round Secures the Win</h3>
Beshear and Rio de Janeiro maintained their composure and executed a perfect clear round in the show jumping phase, continuing their impressive form from earlier events this year (now three wins in their last four internationals). Arden Wildasin was excellent this weekend across a number of sections, but arguably, the clear here on the final day with her new partner Billy Beaufort was the highlight. It is her third stadium clear of her career at this level, and in a tight field, it was enough to secure a podium finish.
<h3>What&rsquo;s Next for the US Equestrian Open?</h3>
With the first eventing qualifier now complete, attention turns to the two remaining events of this year &ndash; Bouckaert in a couple of weeks (October 25th-27th) and TerraNova in November (November 13th-17th).
We estimate that it is going to take 200+ points to secure the series prize money. Emily is off the mark, and a new series is underway.

Emily Mastervich Beshear Wins the First US Equestrian Open Qualifier 

The first qualifier of the US Equestrian Open is heating up, with Hannah Sue Hollberg taking over the lead after an impressive cross-country round aboard Business Ben. The 14-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, previously campaigned by Allison Springer, has been steadily building a partnership with Hannah Sue behind-the-scenes, and today, they pressed the button. They delivered the fastest round of the day (4.4 penalties) and sit as the overnight leader with a rail in hand on Ema Klugman. Updated Win Chances for the Top 5 Riders
With just the show jumping phase left, EquiRatings&rsquo; predictive models have recalculated the win chances for the top five combinations. We call it Prediction Center - a statistical model that forecasts the results of major eventing competitions before and during the event. It simulates the competition 10,000 times, and updates its projected leaderboard. That means, based on the records of all of these horses, their experience at the level, their current score etc. If we ran this competition 10,000 times, Hannah Sue wins 56% of the time and Ema wins 36% of the time. That doesn&rsquo;t leave much room for the others. Can it happen that it&rsquo;s Emily Mastervich Beshear? Of course. It&rsquo;s about a one-in-fourteen chance.&nbsp;

They have focused a huge amount of their training in this phase and they can afford at least one to take the win. Verdict: One down and a win. </li>

Hannah Sue Hollberg Means Business

The first phase of the first US Equestrian Open qualifier is complete and we prepare now for the influential Morven Park cross country course. Jennie Brannigan leads with Connory (Stable name: Sean). Our Prediction Center had them as the pre-event favourites and they maintain that position after the first phase but it&rsquo;s worth noting that this will be only their second international run after an injury at Boekelo this time last year. The time penalties tomorrow are going to have a huge impact on the leaderboard &ndash; 101 combinations have set out on the cross-country track and only three have made the time.

Given the challenge that this course is going to present, it is unusual to be drawn to a 15 year old horse who has only one run at the level &ndash; at Stable View this year. Rio de Janeiro for Emily Mastervich Beshear has two wins already this season at CCI3*-S but most importantly, is fast. On our ratings, using a concept called TSP (Top Speed Percentage), we track every horse that they have taken on in their last ten runs, and track how many they have been faster than. On that metric, Rio de Janeiro is the fastest horse in the field &ndash; outpacing 90% of opponents.

There are points available for the top 8 horses (qualifiers with more than 25 starters give place points all the way to 10th place). Mia Farley has Invictus and BGS Calculated Chaos both in the class and both well placed. Both are reliable horses and with points available for each horse, a good Saturday will leave her well placed after the opening leg in the Series.

Ready to Launch: The US Equestrian Open Series

<h2>Jumping</h2>
The jumping series is a high-stakes competition taking place at the prestigious Wellington International during week 12 of the renowned Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in March 2025.&nbsp; Sixty of the world&rsquo;s top athletes are invited to compete, selected according to the FEI Invitation Rules, will take part in two intense qualifying events &mdash; the WEF challenge class and a 1.50m speed class &mdash; to determine the top 40 riders who will advance to the final grand prix. Athletes who have pre-qualified by competing in major international events like the Olympics or World Championships, will go head-to-head in the grand prix, vying for a substantial prize pool of $1 million.&nbsp;
<h2>Eventing</h2>
The US Equestrian Open eventing series features 15 qualifying competitions at the CCI4*-S level. Athletes accumulate points based on their performances across these qualifying events.
The top six results count toward their total score. To qualify for the series final, athletes must complete at least one qualifying event and achieve a minimum eligibility requirement (MER). The series final offers $50,000 in prize money, distributed among the top three finishers.
Open to all FEI athletes in the U.S. who meet eligibility requirements and have completed a series qualifier, the series final boasts a total prize pool of $200,000.
Dressage will be run in reverse order of the top series leaders, with cross-country and jumping following in reverse order based on previous phases.
<h2>Dressage</h2>
The US Equestrian Open dressage series features approximately 20 CDI3* or higher qualifying events, running from January 1, 2025 through to two weeks before the final.&nbsp; To be eligible, U.S. Organizing Committees must host a CDI3* or higher event, with points earned in the grand prix freestyle to music.
Athletes must compete in at least two U.S. FEI CDI events, and the six best results count toward standings. A minimum score of 67% in the grand prix freestyle is required for qualification. The final, a CDI5* event held in December alternating between the East and West coast, includes the grand prix test and grand prix freestyle to music.
The top 15 in the standings, or more if tied, will be invited to compete with one horse that has also scored at least 67% in the series. The final offers $200,000 in total prize money and travel stipends, with the series' top 15 sharing $50,000.
